Godwick Great Barn’s eastern renovations!
This spring has been a busy one so far getting ready for the wedding season to start in earnest and trying to cram in some necessary improvements to the eastern side of the barn to make that the main entrance and improve it’s accessibility and appearance.
It has been a busy time during which we have built up the brick walls to the east of the barn, finished with old locally sourced reclaimed coping stones. Our steps in this area have been rebuilt, to make for a more comfortable ascent. To the west a small patio area of local pamments has been laid leading to the lawn area.
We have also created a gravel forecourt collection and drop off area to the east of the barn creating a fine reception area. If the weather is inclement then at least most guests can be dropped off at a dry landing area and only the driver will need to come with wellies from the car parking area on the meadow to the north of the barn!! And with the way we have designed the road as you approach the barn on a clear day you can catch a glimpse of the iconic Godwick church tower through the barn and in the distance.
Having finished our building works to the eastern side of the barn, we have now returned the big lime mortar round balls to their home atop the piers that stand alongside the patio area to the east. The history of these balls is interesting. Originally, they sat on the gated entrance to the original Godwick Hall located just to the south west of the Great Barn. They were metaphorically kicked into the long grass at Godwick after the old hall was pulled down in the 1960s. Last year, I reclaimed them for the barn and now they sit on our new bigger piers, giving the barn a sense of style as you enter from the east.
So in just a month we have built new steps, entrance walls, coping stones, gravel forecourt and patio areas outside.
Inside there’s been some changes too with a new carpet and a refurbished dance floor, plus our fabulous new Godwick Great Bar sign! Yes we’ve been busy as bees at Godwick with pre-season preps and hopefully improvements that you you will appreciate.
