Outside wedding ceremonies at Godwick Great Barn
We have many couples that would like to get married outside at Godwick and why not?
Set in a stunning Norfolk landscape overlooking the lost village of Godwick with the church ruins in the distance it is a truly magical scene. It’s also blessed with a western aspect that means the sun (yes the sun, if it shines!) bathes the lawn all afternoon and into the evening where your guests can enjoy wonderful sunsets in the evening. Always on order, but like the weather unfortunately not guaranteed!
It’s a peaceful romantic scene with the only noise being the occasional distant hum of an old biplane out for a recreational flight or the baa-baa of our ever present sheep and lambs grazing on the meadows that surround the barn and the lost village.
Romantic, serene, beautiful and with straw bales as seating and coconut matting as the aisle, it is purely rustic and memorable as a wedding ceremony at a barn in the middle of nowhere should be. That’s one of the attractions of Godwick, it is your venue and yours alone, so this little part of the Norfolk landscape can be etched in your memories forever.
Of course, planning and holding an outside ceremony requires the registrars to agree and Norfolk County Council do offer a Duo Ceremony option and we have had several couples opt for this in the past and hold an outside ceremony at Godwick. You can’t actually do the the legal part of the service outside, so couples have to go inside into the main barn to conduct the legalities while your guests enjoy themselves outside. It doesn’t normally take very long, probably about 10 minutes, and then you are free to start celebrating married life with your guests.
There is also a requirement to have a plan B. Any venue that allows outside ceremonies is well aware of the need to have a plan B especially as the vagaries of the British weather can mean showers instead of sunshine, and we all know that we can’t rely on the British weather, can we? So on the morning of your wedding, our Godwick team and the registrars will make a call whether it’s inside or out!
Mostly we haven’t had a problem, but the great thing about getting married at Godwick is that if required we can hold the ceremony in the dry in the barn and reconfigure the space in 45 minutes or so for the wedding reception and sit down meal. This normally requires us to move the chairs back around the already laid tables and ensure the tables are set out properly and relay the dance floor if that’s needed for later.
Meanwhile, depending on numbers and the weather, your guests can retire to the reception area for drinks and canapes or if the numbers are beyond 80 for the ceremony, use an outside marquee or shelter to host your drinks party, if the weather is really inclement.
All these things can be organised with Godwick’s wedding planning service and is part of the help we give brides and grooms in the run up to their wedding. If the residential package is booked, then there are no further charges for holding a ceremony at the barn, but we do charge extra if it’s the standard wedding package that is booked. This is to cover the additional work and staff required on the day to make sure everything runs smoothly.
I hope this helps and is of use to Godwick brides now and in the future, but for more information don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
