How old am I?
There’s a bit of dispute about exactly how old the Great Barn at Godwick is.
Wikipedia suggests that the barn was built in the 13th Century before Chief Justice Edward Coke bought Godwick in 1580.
However, this seems incredibly unlikely as the style of the Great Barn with its elaborate mullion windows is widely believed to mimic Coke’s Godwick Manor House, which he built in 1585.
A local historian dates the barn as 1576, again this would mean it pre-dates Coke’s Manor House, which seems unlikely.
The barn was therefore more likely to have been built by Coke sometime between 1585 and the end of the century.
I wonder whether we can get closer to knowing the true date by examining and researching local history. We’ll see, off to Gressenhall Rural Life Museum to see whether we can shed any more light on it. I’m also going to try and locate a photo of the original Godwick Hall, so we can show you what it looked like.
